KATHMANDU TOUR

‘from ancient palace to ancient pagoda temples and stupa’

Kathmandu Tour, where most of Nepal World Heritage Sites situated around bustling city of Kathmandu, a metropolitan city a main hub and capital of Nepal where main ethnic people are Newar people practice both Hindu and Buddhist religions.

Kathmandu, named after Kasthamandap, an imposing pagodas near Hanuman Dhoka old palace. Believed the city built by Gunakama Dev in 724 A.D. When seen from the air, a oval shaped Kathmandu Valley looks like a large chess board with sacred Baghmati river winding its way to the south.

As city has grown where people from all parts of Nepal has settled within Kathmandu and its valley areas, making Kathmandu as an important commercial city, despite semi modernization still retains its old time glorious with age-old cultures and traditional life worshipping ancient heritage religions as part of daily life.

Day Itinerary

Morning after breakfast in the hotel, our tour guide will take you in the heart of Kathmandu city, for exciting historical and heritage tour of old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square of great importance.

Tour includes Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess) Kastamandap Temple where Kathmandu name derived from, a temple built with the wood of a single tree, tour of old palace during the reign of Malla and late Shah kings

Afternoon tour of famous Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath Stupa, one of the largest dome shaped monument in Asia of Buddhist religion and culture, after an exciting and interesting tour head back to hotel with time to rest for individual activities.

HANUMAN DHAOKA (Durbar Square)

A large square with historic seat of Nepal Royal from past to former kings, the square with old temples and palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. This is where King of Nepal was crowned. Interesting place to visit in the square includes:

  • Taleju Temple built by King Mahendra Malla in 1,549 A.D.
  • Gigantic figure of Kal Bhairav, the God of Destruction.
  • Basantpur Durbar or Nautalle Durbar, built by King Prithivi Narayan Shah.
  • Coronation Platform (Nasal Chok ).
  • Hall of Public audience (Gaddi Baithak)
  • Statue of King Pratp Malla-Big Bell-big Drums and Jaganath Temple.

TEMPLE OF KUMARI (The Living Goddess)

A temple and residence of Living Goddess; Kumari, located in the hub of Hanuman Dhoka Palace square:

The building with carved wooden balconies and window screens built by King Jaya Prakash Malla, the last Malla King of Kathmandu, Kumari Goddess also known as virgin living Goddess. When she reaches puberty she is replaced by another next Kumari.

Pashupatinath Temple:

Located at a distance of 5 k.m. towards east of Kathmandu on the bank of holy Baghmati River, the temple dedicated to lord Shiva, (one of the main Three Gods of Hindu religion) it has two tiered golden roof and silver doors. It is famous for its superb architecture. It is a center of annual pilgrimage on the day of Maha Shiva-Ratri (Shiva Birth Anniversary).

SWAMBHUNATH STUPA:

Nepal’s important heritage and landmark, as well one of the world's most glories Buddhist stupa, with an history of more than 2,600 years old, popularly called as "Monkey Temple" due to many Rhesus species monkeys that dwell around small thick forest near the stupa.

A main structure of Stupa made of solid hemisphere of bricks and clay supporting lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt. Painted on the four sides of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Located on a hillock about 7 meters above the level of the valley floor, the hill a mosaic of small Stupas and pagodas temples, where one can have great views of Kathmandu city and the valley with snow capped mountains towards north on a clear fine day.

BOUDHANATH STUPA:

Bouddhanath located east from the city limit a big colossal ancient dome shaped stupa, believed largest in the world with all Seeing Eyes of Lord Buddha, built by Lichchhavi King Mana Dev in the 5th A.D. It is built on an octagonal base inset with prayer wheels.

Bouddhanath Stupa, the area also known as Little Tibet, where you can witness many locals and pilgrims of Tibetan origin with Buddhist religion and practice of Tibetan culture and traditions.

The Stupa or chhorten surrounded by circular market, which forms a part of Tibet town. In this case, also the four pairs of the Buddha's eyes give a vivid flash to the four cardinal directions, meaning to keep a diligent watch over the people and their commitments all day all night. The chhorten embraces the authentic philosophy of Mahayana faith known as Lamaism in Nepal, Sikkim, Ladakh, Bhutan and Tibet.

DASHINKALI:

Temple of Dakshikali situated 10 k.m. south of Kathmandu city. This place holds an important pilgrimage, drawing over 400,000 pilgrims a year. Pilgrims visit this temple to offer prayers and animal sacrifices to the Goddess Kali.

BUDHANILKANTHA:

Located about 8 k.m. north of Kathmandu, at the base of Shivapuri hill.

The beautiful idol of Sleeping Vishnu on the bed of Serpents in the mid of the pond, the history dates back more than 7th century old.
